What is Paxil ®?
Paxil ® (paroxetine hydrochloride) is an orally administered
psychotropic drug. Paxil (paroxetine) is one of a class of
medicines called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).
These drugs increase the activity of an important brain chemical
called serotonin, a chemical know to be deficient in patients
with MDD (major depressive disorder).
Paxil is approved for use in adults for the following indications:
major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic
disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder,
and post-traumatic stress disorder. It was the first
antidepressant formally approved in the United States for the
treatment of social phobia, causing it to be sometimes referred
to (although inaccurately) as an anti-shyness drug.

with food or milk if it upsets your stomach. Never take more
Paxil, Seroxat, paroxetine than is prescribed for you. If your

time before taking your next dose.

paroxetine overdose include somnolence, coma, nausea, tremor,
tachycardia, confusion, vomiting, and dizziness. Other notable
signs and symptoms observed with overdoses involving paroxetine (alone
or with othersubstances) include mydriasis, convulsions (status
epilepticus), ventriculardysrhythmias, hypertension, aggressive
reactions, syncope, hypotension, stupor, bradycardia, dystonia,
rhabdomyolysis, symptoms of hepatic dysfunction (hepatic failure,
hepatic necrosis, jaundice, hepatitis, and hepatic steatosis),
serotoninsyndrome, manic reactions, myoclonus, acute renal
failure, and urinary retention.
Paxil Side Effects
Common side effects include: drowsiness, sleepiness , nausea,
upset stomach, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, rash, itch and
changes in urination. Jaw, neck, and back muscle spasms, fever,
chills, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms, yellowing of the skin

the above symptoms is severe or persistent.

Paxil Drug Interaction
Warnings Potential for Interaction With Monoamine Oxidase
Inhibitors: In patients receiving another serotonin reuptake
inhibitor drug in combination with a monoamine oxidaseinhibitor (MAOI),
there have been reports of serious, sometimes fatal, reactions
including hyperthermia, rigidity, myoclonus, autonomic
instability with possible rapid fluctuations ofvital signs, and
mental status changes that include extreme agitation progressing
to delirium and coma. These reactions have also been reported in
patients who have recently discontinued that drug and have been
started on an MAOI. Some cases presented with features resembling
neuroleptic malignant syndrome. While there are no human data
showing such an interaction with PAXIL, limited animal data on
the effects of combineduse of paroxetine and MAOIs suggest that
these drugs may act synergistically to elevate blood pressure and
evoke behavioral excitation. Therefore, it is recommended that
PAXIL not be used in combination with an MAOI, or within 14 days
of discontinuing treatment with an MAOI. At least 2 weeks should
be allowed after stopping PAXIL before starting anMAOI.
Potential Interaction With Thioridazine: Thioridazine administration alone produces prolongation of the QTc interval, which is associated with serious ventricular arrhythmias. Therefore, it is recommended that paroxetine not be used in combination with thioridazine.
Paxil Contraindications
Concomitant use in patients taking either monoamine oxidase
inhibitors (MAOIs) orthioridazine is contraindicated. PAXIL is
contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to paroxetine
or any of the inactive ingredients in PAXIL.
Discontinuation of Treatment with Paxil:
Symptoms associated with discontinuation of Paxil have been
reported. Patients should be monitored for these symptoms when
discontinuing treatment, regardless of the indication for which
Paxil is being prescribed. A gradual reduction in the dose rather
than abrupt cessation is recommended whenever possible. If
intolerable symptoms occur following a decrease in the dose or
upon discontinuation of treatment, then resuming the previously
prescribed dose may be considered.Subsequently, the physician may
continue decreasing the dose but at a more gradual rate.
Paxil Notes
Addiction Potential & Withdrawal Symptoms - The manufacturers
claim it is impossible to get addicted. Other campaigners
disagree. The medical community generally considers that
withdrawal symptoms are not enough to regard a drug as addictive;
it has to leave the user needing more and more in order to gain
the same desired effect. That's not the case with Paroxetine, as
the body does not become tolerant to Parexotine's positive
effects. Note, however, that addiction is generally also an
extremely debated issue, although no drug is generally considered
to be addictive that does not have both withdrawal symptoms and
tolerance.
Recent studies have found that the drug is relatively ineffective
in children, and that they are prone to becoming suicidal when
first given it.
